Former US Olympic gymnastics gold champion Mary Lou Retton’s mugshot was published Tuesday, months after she was jailed in West Virginia on a DUI charge.
The mugshot showed the former gymnastics star in a gloomy demeanor, appearing to be on the edge of tears.
On May 17, Retton was charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or narcotics, according to Marion County Court records. She was freed from jail after paying a $1,500 personal recognizance bail.
Retton’s attorney, Edmund J. Rollo, earlier gave a statement to Fox News Digital in which the gold medalist acknowledged driving under the influence and apologized.
“I take full responsibility for my actions,” the statement read. “What occurred was just unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends, and fans: I have disappointed you, and I really apologize.
“I am determined to learn from this experience and make positive adjustments in my life. I sincerely appreciate your concern, encouragement, and continuous support.”
Retton also made a no-contest plea, and a Marion County court penalized her $100, Rollo reported.

Retton was dubbed “America’s sweetheart” after winning a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She was just 16 years old when she became the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around title with perfect 10s in the floor exercise and vault in the last two revolutions.
