Aryna Sabalenka has faced opponents who have upped their game in order to knock her out in every match at this year’s Championships; nonetheless, she has always risen to the occasion to defeat each opponent.
A cursory look at her records thus far indicates that the top seed has won every set on her route to another quarter-final at SW19, but the 27-year-old has had to work hard to beat Marie Bouzkova, British No. 1 Emma Raducanu, and former doubles partner Elise Mertens to make the last eight.
Sunday’s triumph against Mertens was the No. 1 seed’s third in a row with the same scoreline—7-6, 6-4 or 6-4, 7-6—showing how tight her previous victories have been, and she expects another tough match against Siegemund.
After improving to 46-8 this season, the 20-time WTA champion is looking for her 47th win, the most on the circuit, to keep her ambition of reaching her maiden Wimbledon final and third consecutive Slam final in 2025 alive.
While the world number one cannot look too far ahead, with two more victories required to reach another major final, Sabalenka, who has a 15-5 record at Wimbledon and has reached the semi-finals twice — in 2021 and 2023 — is hoping to extend her run by overcoming the first-time quarter-finalist at SW19.
